AGM 2023

This year’s AGM will be held on Saturday 18th March at Salmesbury War Memorial Hall, Cuerdale Lane, Walton-le-Dale, Samlesbury, Preston PR5 0UY from 5.30pm to 9.00pm.
This year we have two interesting speakers: Dominik Reszka and his fellow researchers will be talking about their work at the University of Central Lancashire in collaboration with Lancashire police. They have been developing a forensic toolkit for officers to use at wildlife crime scenes. Our other speaker, Jo Beaman, will be providing an update on the excellent work South Ribble Council are undertaking on developing a biodiversity scheme to help inform planners of the likely presence of particular protected species on planned development sites. They have already shown a link between ancient woodlands, mature woodlands and the location of badger setts, using our data.
Our popular shop will be available for you to stock up on badger goodies and we’ll be having our fun raffle.

Please order and pay for your food in advance. We realise, with costs going up, people may not be able to afford the increase in the cost pice of the meal (£9.80). So we have chosen to subsidise it from LBG funds and keep the price the same as last year – £7.50. If you are able to pay the full amount, please do. And please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments regarding the above.

All persons wishing to nominate anyone for committee, lay down a question or propose a motion, please do so in writing to the Secretary, PO Box 58, Lancaster, LA1 5AF to arrive no later than March 11th 2023 (voting is only by show of hands at the meeting, no arrangements have been made for proxy voting).

Learn About Badgers!
A badger sett is a system of tunnels and nesting chambers lined with bedding such as grass, moss and leaves.
Cubs are normally born in February, and the average number in a litter is three, although the range can be from one to five.
Badgers are considered omnivorous, although their diet varies so much in different countries they are also sometimes termed ‘local specialists’.
Badgers live mainly in woods and copses in extensive underground burrow systems called setts.
Badgers are shy, nocturnal animals that live in underground chambers connected by a network of tunnels known as a sett.
Did You Know?
It has been estimated that up to 50,000 badgers may be killed on our roads each year. If safe to do so, it is worth checking what appears to be a dead badger.
Snares can do serious damage to skin tissue which is not immediately obvious.
Badger cubs begin to explore above ground in May, sometimes without mum’s permission!
Try not to cause the animal alarm, but observe from a distance.
